It seems likely that Peter, Andrew, James, and John had met Jesus prior to the moment of being called by name to follow him. Almost certainly they had heard about him from others. Perhaps others had encouraged them to listen to this new Rabbi from Nazareth. He continues to do the same today. As you heard in our homilies, God is the one who calls, but He often uses people’s voice of encouragement and invitation to do so. He slowly draws us to follow him. Called By Name Sunday is an initiative of the Diocese of Austin Vocations Office that celebrates God’s call to each of us to follow Him in a particular way.
